Sketchbook-Medium practice

These are a few sketches that I did in class. We were suppose to look at various things around the class, and draw them. My main focus was to practice with different materials and mediums that I've never worked with before.

Head Of An Alex

This was an assignment in class where we were tasked with finding a famous artwork, and replacing the subject with someone we knew. I replaced Leonardo Da Vinci's "Head Of A Woman", and replaced the subject with my beautiful friend Alexandria Brown. Since the original is done on wood, I had to use brown paper, which is closest to the color. Everything is down with charcoal, and a little bit of white colored pencil on the hair. In this piece, I wanted to capture Leonardo's amazing talent for making the human skin look so smooth. Therefore, I tried to shade out the face enough to capture the appropriate surface.

Death of a Nation

This is a piece that I found on Pintrest.  I couldn't find the original artist, but I love the message that they conveyed with this piece. My interpretation of it, is the pain that the smoke may feel as it pollutes this beautiful earth. This earth is a beautiful place and I am a strong advocate in it being preserved, as we are mere visitors on a foreign place that was here long before, and will be here long after us.

Cultural Appreciation

This is a watercolor portrait of a girl I imagined. I took references from Indian women in traditional attire. To do this, I used shades of purple and blue watercolor to capture the skin tone. The color purple represents royalty because I beilieve this woman in her natural state is royal. I love how this piece ended up, and I wish to continue doing women from different cultures and water-coloring them.

Sunflower

This was a Piece of art that I did from a picture of a sunflower that I took in Puerto Rico. The petals and stem are made from paint paper that I cut and formed into the appropriate shapes. To get my desired texture for the center of the sunflower, I simply used brown watercolor.

What Was & What's Now

This piece was inspired by one of my favorite artists, Salvador Dali. While creating this, I had a constant mindset of "what was and what's now". I thought of a place where what once was  beautiful has now fallen into oblivion. Like most of Salvador Dali's pieces, this work has a sense of being lost. I also wanted to try my hand at doing an optical illusion with the staircase to the left. 

Life's constant flow

This is a watercolor piece that I painted at home. I've always thought that Koi fish were beautiful in the way that they swim and what they represent. These fish represent the flow and the balance of earth.

1 point perspective.

This is a one point perspective piece that I created. I got inspiration from an image on google, and worked from there. I drew the shapes on the paper to begin with, and then added other ideas, shapes, etc from there. I colored the figures with colored pencils. and the background with pencil.

Water Color + Pencil hand

This was a piece of my hand that I created. To make this, I started by taking a picture of my hand, and sketching it out lightly on the paper. After going through half out it with just pencil, i began to get extremely tired, and bored of the work. To spice it up a bit, i decided to take water color to go over the pencil. To tie everything back in with the original sketch, I then went back over the watercolor with more pencil.

Zen Tangle

This piece that I created is a play on a zen tangle. I wanted to start with the base of a head, and slowly sprout from there. I used patterns from sources along with personal ideas from my head to create the shapes and patterns there now. I suppose it can represent the brain with it's immense complexity and inner workings.
